This week in gagagadget:

Several of Apple’s big rivals launched summer smartphones to compete with the iPhone. The release date for Dell’s long-awaited Streak was finally announced, and launches in the US today. The tablet-smartphone love child, which has been available in the UK since July 4th, comes just one day after the launch of both Motorola’s Droid 2 and RIM’s BlackBerry Torch.

In more BlackBerry news, RIM announced on Monday that it will be updating its BlackBerry Curve line. The new Curve, part of a line which has been known for its affordability, will finally get a 3G upgrade, and will ship with the new BlackBerry OS 6.0. Between the new Torch and the updated Curve, it looks like RIM is looking to get back into the smartphone war with full force. The Curve 3G shipped in Canada and the UK this week, and will be available in the US in the next coming weeks.

Fresh out of the rumor mill, Engadget reported Thursday that Google and Sony Ericsson are collaborating and in the final stages of planning for a gaming smartphone. The device, powered by Android and branded as PlayStation, might be the push Google needs into the gaming market, and may finally confirm the years-long rumor of a PlayStation phone.

And finally, those interested in open source projects finally have a way to browse the web on a calculator (and add numbers together too, we suppose). No more wasting time with Tetris; Open SciCalc, a project from Matt Stack, is an open source calculator featuring a 4.3-inch touchscreen, built-in WiFi, and which can run multiple programming languages, blowing even the most sophisticated Texas Instrument completely out of the water.
