We’re not sure who tipped him off, and how reliable the so-far nameless source is, but Kevin Rose, founder of popular social news site, Digg, confirmed the rumors surrounding the new set top box from Apple. The updated device, formerly called Apple TV, now dubbed iTV, has been rumored for release for months. However, Rose confirmed these rumors as true on his blog yes. Rose wrote that the new iTV will run iOS and support TV-specific apps such as “video sharing/streaming/recording,” “interactive news,” as well as games. He also mentioned sharing of pictures and video from iPhone to iTV (with a $99 MobileMe subscription from Apple, of course), and the iPad as a kind of remote control that can also edit video and play games. Rose’s boldest prediction is that, because stations will be able to “directly monetize and distribute their content” on the iTV through Apple’s iAds program, the entire cable industry will eventually fall to iTV and similar set top box, on-demand programs or systems. Although no official cite was sourced for this information Rose seems unwaveringly confident in the nameless tip, and presents the information as fact, not rumor. “From what he hears,” iTV will debut at $99 and be available in September.”
